Easton College sees red.

Easton College, Norwich is part of a red squirrel breeding programme based in East Anglia have had some wonderful success over the past few months, and the most exciting last month when a release in Anglesey was made.

The college has a breeding pair of red squirrels, the male who is 100% British and originally from Natural Surroundings paired up with the female and produced 4 kittens. Two of these kittens, both male has recently been chipped, paired with a female and released in Anglesey; which is known to have zero population of grey squirrels, who carry the virus that is fatal to the reds.

Some of Easton College’s National Diploma in Countryside Management students have designed and are now currently building a brand new squirrel pen which will then allow for the college to house up to 3 breeding pairs of red squirrel. With the number of successful kittens born within the programme this year there are vast possibilities of further breeding pairs this year, and Easton College intend on doing all they can to ensure they help increase the number of red squirrel.
