Uniformed Services students thanked by MP for their litter picking efforts

The work of Easton College’s Uniformed Services students to clean up litter in the Easton and Bawburgh area has been recognised by Ben Goldsborough, MP for South Norfolk, who visited the college to hear first-hand about the project.
Level 2 students Erin Snow and Tyler Houghton, supported by Uniformed Services Lecturer Delon Commosioung, gave a presentation to fellow students and Mr Goldsborough about ‘Operation Clean and Green’.
Operation Clean and Green has seen 30 Level 2 Uniformed Services students taking part in regular litter picks in the local area – a contribution that has been well received by the community.
Erin and Tyler spoke about how littering and pollution not only harms the environment but can quickly become an issue for communities, and ultimately for the emergency services, if left unchecked.
Cleaning up litter in the local area has provided the students with an opportunity to make a practical difference for the community, to learn more about sustainability, and to lead by example as future uniformed services personnel.
Uniformed Services student Erin Snow said:
It’s been surprising how much we’ve found on the litter picks. We’ve found bicycle wheels, a CD player, a little plug-in radiator, bike tyres, and lots of vapes. I vape myself, but I wouldn’t throw it out, because I know that the lithium isn't good for the environment and there’s obviously other chemicals in there.”
The students have also been working to identify potential solutions – from information campaigns promoting individuals' responsibilities, to lobbying fast food outlets to take more responsibility for waste associated with their businesses.
Ben Goldsborough MP, said:
It was fantastic to chat with Easton College students Erin and Tyler, and their lecturer Delon, about the great work the Uniformed Services students are doing to keep our community clean.
We live in the most beautiful county in England, so it is comforting and reassuring to know that the next generation care so much about keeping our countryside clean.
Full credit must go to the students for their hard work, and to Delon and all staff at Easton College for the exceptional education they provide."
The students’ presentation to Mr Goldsborough followed a recent visit by Sarah Taylor, Police and Crime Commissioner for Norfolk, who was also impressed by their work.
Uniformed Services student Tyler Houghton commented:
I would say the project has definitely made an impact. I never thought that we would be speaking to a Police Commissioner and our MP about what we’ve been doing.”
Delon Commosioung, Uniformed Services Lecturer, Easton College, added:
We are very pleased to see the students undertaking this sustainability project as well as entering into the spirit of community service. We hope to see many of them continue in this vein once they embark on their careers in the services.”
