What You Will Study
This apprenticeship meets the need for IT Technicians in our local area. This course provides a structured learning route, helping to upskill an individual with an interest and basic ability in IT. Roles can include Support Technician, Network Technician or Digital Communications Technician. They will provide support to customers with their systems, by using different tools and methods to problem solve and troubleshoot routine and non-routine problems.
This apprenticeship involves studying a variety of modules in college that help to build the necessary knowledge and skills. Teaching for the course takes place in the college’s state of the art DigiTech Factory, which provides you with a hybrid learning environment where IT equipment is provided (which you will use at work), so that you can earn and develop skills ready for the workplace.
Course content includes:
- Architecture and networks
- Remote access and security
- Virtualisation and cloud
- Coding/ diagnostics
- Business processes
You will complete the Information Communications Technician Apprenticeship Level 3 standard.
- This apprenticeship involves college attendance and off the job training
- You will also develop your knowledge, skills and behaviours
- You need to have an employer to support your apprenticeship and be employed in a relevant job role
- The typical length of this apprenticeship course is 24 months
- This course has multiple entry points throughout the year.

Entry Requirements
- You will need to have achieved a GCSE grade 4/ C in maths and English (language or literature), or Functional Skills Level 2 in maths and English
- If you have not achieved English or maths at Level 2 (4/ C or above at GCSE or Functional Skills Level 2), you will have to attend Functional Skills sessions which will be held on an additional day to your regular college attendance.
In order to enrol onto an apprenticeship, you need to be employed in a relevant job role and undertake a range of tasks which would enable you to complete the qualification.
How You Will Be Assessed
Training and assessments are delivered in the workplace and in college. You will be required to attend college-based sessions as part of your training, whilst also completing off-the-job training in the workplace. You will also complete assessments and observations in the workplace.
You must have your portfolios and Functional Skills Level 2 in English and maths in place before you take your End Point Assessments (EPA).
The End Point Assessment (EPA) includes:
- 60 minute professional discussion with an independent assessor, underpinned by the portfolio
- 1,500-word project report and questioning.
Course Progression
The impact of this course can support a your progression, which may include continuation onto a Level 4 apprenticeship, such as Network Engineer or Cyber Security Technologist, or further software developer programmes.
Where Your Course Can Take You
The successful apprentice will be able to consider further continuation, promotion or development at work or within the wider digital sector/industry. The aim of this course is to create an apprentice who is prepared for modern working life within the digital sector.
Fees
Apprenticeship course fees are subject to the age of the apprentice, and the size of the company.
For employers who do not pay the apprenticeship levy and who take on an apprentice who is aged between 16-21 at the start of their apprenticeship, there will be no direct cost and the full training costs will be covered by Government funding.
If the apprentice is aged 22+ the government partially subsidises the training costs and the employer will need to pay 5% of the total fee. In the case of this course, the employer contribution would be £750.
A levy paying company will pay the full cost of the apprenticeship from their levy account, which in this case would be £15,000.
Please note that course fees are paid by the employer and apprentices must not be asked to make a financial contribution toward their training.
