What You Will Study
This apprenticeship meets the need for Network Engineers in the local area. Network Engineers need to be skilled in remote access post-pandemic, as many staff need support while working from home.
Network Engineers provide remote and/or on-site support to internal and/or external organisations by solving problems and troubleshooting routine and non-routine network and IT infrastructure problems. Network Engineers will deal with hardware and software, and are key in solving problems quickly when networks fail.
This apprenticeship involves studying a variety of modules in college that will help you to build the necessary knowledge and skills. Teaching for the course takes place in the college’s state of the art DigiTech Factory, which provides you with a hybrid learning environment where IT equipment is provided (which you will use at work), so that you can learn and develop skills ready for the workplace.
Course content includes:
- Installing, configuring and testing components/devices
- Analysing data
- Optimising system performance, including upgrades
- Complying with all legislation, policies and procedures
- Interpreting requirements and specifications
The course typically lasts two years and you will complete the Level 4 Network Engineer apprenticeship standard.

How You Will Be Assessed
Training and assessments are delivered in the workplace and in college. You will be required to attend college-based sessions as part of your training, whilst also completing off-the-job training, assessments and observations in the workplace.
At the end of the apprenticeship, you will be ready for the End Point Assessments (EPA), which will include:
- A two-day simulation assessment containing two seven-hour tasks, plus a 45-minute questioning session after the simulation assessments
- A 60-minute discussion with an independent assessor, underpinned by a portfolio of evidence
Course Progression
You may wish to develop further by entering higher education, or by completing a degree level apprenticeship in IT.
Where Your Course Can Take You
Upon completing this apprenticeship, you may wish to continue, develop or seek promotion within your organisation or the wider sector. You will also be skilled and able to share your best practice, knowledge and skills within your organisation.
Fees
Apprenticeship course fees are subject to the age of the apprentice, and the size of the company.
For employers who do not pay the apprenticeship levy and who take on an apprentice who is aged between 16-21 at the start of their apprenticeship, there will be no direct cost and the full training costs will be covered by Government funding. If the apprentice is aged 22+ the government partially subsidises the training costs and the employer will need to pay 5% of the total fee. In the case of this course, the employer contribution would be £850.
A levy paying company will pay the full cost of the apprenticeship from their levy account, which in this case would be £17,000.
Please note that course fees are paid by the employer and apprentices must not be asked to make a financial contribution toward their training.
