Land Based Service Engineers and Technicians will carry out a range of tasks on machinery, plant and equipment specific to their sector within the industry. Upon completing Year 1 on the Land Based Service Engineer standard, apprentices will progress on to the Technician standard and will build upon their knowledge, skills and behaviours. The role can include preparing, installing and handing over complex and advanced machinery, plant and equipment, checking performance, diagnosing and repairing complex faults, conducting complex repairs and inspections, and compiling repair proposals, estimates and quotes.

Course content in Years 2-4 of the programme build on the knowledge, skills and behaviours learned in Year 1 and include:

  • Working on- site, using initiative in a customer- facing role
  • Mentoring and supervising junior colleagues
  • Giving advice and guidance to customers about machinery
  • Learning to diagnose and fault- find, so apprentices can recommend the best course of action to bring machinery/ equipment to operational requirements, according to the manufacturer’s specifications
  • A choice between the 4 available pathways (based on the nature of the employer): agricultural equipment, construction and plant equipment, outdoor power equipment, and fixed plant and equipment

The course is delivered at our Easton campus.

If the apprentice is aged 22+ the government partially subsides the training costs and the employer will need to pay 5% of the costs. In the case of this course, the fee would be £1,050.

For an employer with more than 50 employees a 5% charge will be implemented regardless of the age of the apprentice which in this case would be £1,050.

A levy paying company will pay the full cost of the apprenticeship from their levy account which in this case would be £21,000.

Please note that course fees are to be paid by the employer and apprentices must not be asked to make a financial contribution toward their training.
